Yellow Dog Eats is an “American joint” serving BBQ, sandwiches & craft brews in a colorful, relaxed setting with a secluded patio. It is located in downtown New Smyrna in the Canal Street historic district. Yellow Dog Eats is known for creative food concoctions using locally sourced ingredients and meats smoked in house. Oh and of course, dogs are welcome!
On our recent visit, we arrived mid-afternoon so it wasn’t very crowded. We were greeted with a smile and given a table out back on the private patio. It is decorated with a mix of lights, greenery and fun signage. Our chipper and knowledgeable server got us set-up with drinks (Funky Buddha and some of their fresh brewed ice tea) and menus quickly.
The New Smyrna Beach location is actually the second Yellow Dog Eats. Chef Fish Morgan’s original Yellow Dog is located in Gotha, FL. Like the Gotha location, they pride themselves on using the highest quality ingredients: the best deli meats, 15 varieties of locally-grown greens, and their own multi-grain “Pioneer” bread. They smoke their own meat on the premises as well. Chef Morgan is master at creating new and innovative dishes, having trained at the Culinary Institute of America.
We came to Yellow Dog Eats for BBQ and it delivered! I loved the White Trash sandwich, which is pulled pork, topped with tangy coleslaw, Gouda cheese, pecan smoked bacon, and their gold BBQ sauce and served on thick-cut white bread. We also tried The Holy Crap which is a former weekly special that has quickly became a fixture. It is honey mesquite roasted turkey piled high, and pressed to perfection with avocado, pecan-smoked bacon, goat cheese, red onions, and basil mayo served on thick sliced multi-grain bread. It was spectacular looking and I think we actually did say, “Holy Crap” when it arrived.
Besides salads and tacos, they have probably 20 different sandwiches to choose from, all innovative and christened with fun names. There are also vegetarian options if you have nonmeat eaters in your party. One in particular that I plan to try is The Classic Jolly Green Giant which is a spinach wrap fillled with avocado spread, goat cheese, smoked asparagus, red onions, spring mix, cilantro lime avocado dressing and local organic sun-flower sprouts from Green Flamingo Organics in Florida. It sounds incredible.
Yellow Dog Eats is one of those restaurants that you love to support. Fun, creative food in a great atmosphere that supports other local businesses. Win/win for everyone!
