As soon as we heard about the Wake-up Café, we made plans to have breakfast there. They serve the standard American breakfast fare, but also have several Spanish and Argentinian specialties on the menu that make it a unique breakfast destination.
First impression….the Wake-up Café is no secret! They get super busy and push a lot of customers through their cozy space. We were committed though and didn’t mind waiting for a table to become available. The wait was quick and within 10-15 minutes we were seated amidst the bustle with a cup of hot coffee.
The menu is pretty big like most café/diner type joints and we found a ton of choices that we wanted to try. A second visit is definitely in the cards. For our initial foray, we opted for the Spanish Skillet and the Alfajores Pancakes (Alpha-Hor). The Spanish Skillet was homemade fried potatoes topped with Pisto Manchego, a savory mix of tomatoes, eggplant, zucchini, squash, bell peppers, onions, garlic and manchego cheese, then topped with two eggs of any style. It was a delicious blend of flavors and I’m glad our server recommended it to me. The Alfajores Pancakes (Alpha-Hor) were dulce de leche caramel sandwiched between two buttermilk pancakes and then dusted with powdered sugar. They were super rich and super delicious. I stole a few bites from my wife and they were like dessert for breakfast.
I’ve seen reviews saying that food takes forever to come out at the Wake-up Café. Our food was out in like 10 minutes or so…but even if it had taken longer, it would have been OK. They make each order from scratch so you know it is fresh. That is worth a little extra time for me.
Other notable menu items that looked good for the next visit were the Lomito which is beef tenderloin steak topped with chimichurri, ham, cheese, tomato & mayonnaise on artisan bread and the Strawberries and Cream Stuffed French Toast which is Texas Toast stuffed with strawberry and cream cheese then dusted with powdered sugar.
We don’t go out for breakfast too often, but when we do, the Wake-up Café is on our short list of New Smyrna Beach breakfast destinations. We love family-owned restaurants…especially ones with solid service and a unique food choices. The Wake-up Café checks all the boxes!
