Norwood’s Eatery and Treehouse Bar is a New Smyrna Beach institution. It has been around since 1946 when it opened as Norwood’s Seafood Restaurant. Since then, it has expanded and changed ownership several times, growing and improving with age. The obvious initial appeal for us was being able to eat in a treehouse. Fortunately for us, the atmosphere, service, and food exceeded our expectations. We had a great experience and can’t wait to return!
Walking up to Norwood’s is impressive with the huge second level treehouse built into the trees. Inside the first floor is beautiful too, with lots of great stonework and greenery. We were greeted and seated quickly by a friendly staff member. We had perused the menu online before coming in, so we had a few starters that we were excited to try out. We started with the house-made zucchini bread which is served warm with local honey cinnamon butter and the coconut shrimp that comes with a pineapple-mango sweet chili dipping sauce. Both were excellent and we would order them again.
For main courses, we tried out the seafood pot pie which was something that we had never had before. It had a nice mix of shrimp, fish, scallops and crab inside the perfectly baked pastry. We also ordered the almond-encrusted grouper with beurre blanc. We weren’t sure what that was so we had to google it. Beurre blanc for people like us that don’t know is a creamy, thick, but light-textured pale yellow sauce made from butter, shallots, white wine, and white wine vinegar. It paired really well with the grouper and made for a very rich and unique dish.
We were too full for dessert but did go upstairs to the 21+ Treehouse Bar where they had live music going which created a great vibe up in the trees! We stuck to beer upstairs at the bar, sampling some of Florida’s best brews to keep it local. We had a Jai Alai (Tampa) and a Feeding Frenzy Red from New Smyrna Brewing. There is a ton of seating upstairs, we sat at a high-top table situated around one of the massive trees.
It was a great night and it is easy to see why Norwood’s has been around so long. The treehouse is amazing and it is also that rare restaurant that can back up their unique environment with excellent cuisine!
